Fire damages café at London Zoo

A café at London Zoo run by foodservice caterer Ampersand has been at the centre of a major fire this morning.

More than 70 firefighters have been tackling the blaze at the Animal Adventure Café and shop, next to the children's zoo. The fire brigade were called to the incident in Regent's Park soon after 6am. The blaze was said to be under control just over three hours later.

It is believed that more than three quarters of the café and shop and half of the roof have been affected.

Fire station manager Clive Robinson, who attending the incident, said: "Part of nearby animal petting area was also affected although at this stage we don't know if any animals were involved.

"Firefighters worked hard to bring the fire under control as quickly as possible and to stop it from spreading to neighbouring animal enclosures. Crews will remain at the scene throughout the morning damping down any remaining pockets of fire."

A spokesperson for Ampersand added: "The fire broke out in a retail and small café outlet within the grounds of London Zoo and we can confirm that nobody was hurt. The fire authorities remain on site and are investigating the cause and our core team will stay at the zoo to provide any services or support needed. The zoo will be closed today until further notice."

The cause of the fire is now being investigated.

Ampersand, a division of CH&Co, runs an extensive number of catering contracts within tourist attractions, including for visitors in the gardens at Buckingham Palace.
