Favourite retail Christmas tracks revealed

Vintage Christmas songs have unsurprisingly topped the list of the most played Christmas tracks, based on analysis of music played in shops, nightclubs, pubs and broadcast last year.

According to music licensing body PPL, Band Aid's Do They Know it's Christmas (2014) topped the chart, with the Pogues' Fairytale of New York in second and All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey in third.

Classic Christmas tracks feature heavily in the top 10, with Wizzard's I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day taking sixth spot for a third year running.

Contemporary tracks only tend to creep in on the back of exposure afforded by marketing such as John Lewis's Christmas advert. Its 2014 track, Tom Odell's rendition of Real Love, placed at number nine.
