Entries are now open for the UK Sommelier of the Year 2024, the award that recognises the finest talent in wine service.
UK Sommelier of the Year, which is now run by the IWSC (International Wine and Spirits Competition) in partnership with the UK Sommelier Academy, the UK arm of the Association of Sommellerie Internationale, is open to professional sommeliers and waiting staff working in the UK.
Widely regarded as the premier accolade in UK wine service, the UK Sommelier of the Year has recognised the leading lights when it comes to wine knowledge, including the late Gerard Basset, Ronan Sayburn and Xavier Rousset.
This year the award has been redesigned by the IWSC to include a more comprehensive and engaging format, with a two-day event designed to test the sommeliers’ skills.
IWSC chief executive Christelle Guibert said: "We are thrilled to take the reins of the UK Sommelier Competition and continue its legacy of excellence.
“As we embark on this exciting journey, our goal is to create a vibrant community for the hospitality industry, offering unparalleled networking, mentoring, support, and development opportunities.
“This competition is more than just an event; it’s a platform for sommeliers across the UK to showcase their talent, expand their knowledge, and connect with key industry leaders. We encourage all sommeliers to seize this opportunity to elevate their careers and be part of a prestigious tradition celebrating the best in wine and service."
Those keen to enter the UK Sommelier of the Year will be required to complete an online entrance exam. Successful candidates will then be invited to join the UK Sommelier Academy, receiving coaching and mentorship from past winners.
They will then compete across two days on 14-15 October 2024, with tests on practical service, blind tasting, and theory. The competition will culminate in a live final before the announcement of the winner.
Entries for the UK Sommelier of the year close on 19 August.
