Sketch owner Mourad Mazouz has recounted the "hysterical" reaction the London restaurant received when it opened 15 years ago, as he set out the struggles of the early years of the business.
The concept was largely misunderstood in the early days, Mazouz added. He said that The Guardian's Matthew Fort described the design concept as âa lot of bollocksâ, while a review in The Independent labelled it âthe most disgusting restaurant in Britainâ under the title âDog's breakfast and baby sickâ.
In a period in which Mazouz said the business had âpretty much every insult in the book thrown at usâ, Marina OâLoughlin described it as the most absurd restaurant in the country, asking: âIs Jeff Koons cooking?â
âWorse,â quipped Mazouz. âItâs the great artist Pierre Gagnaire.â
But despite the early criticism, Sketchâs fortunes changes when the late AA Gill, writing in The Sunday Times, gave the Gallery 5/5 and the Lecture Room & Library 4/5.
Mazouz said: âIt was the first article that was good on Sketch and from this moment people understood what we were doing was not idiotic.
âWe made many mistake and were millions over budget â" I know because Iâm still paying. But we learned so much along the way and Iâm proud that we are here 15 years on and that Sketch has become a huge success.â
He added that he was proud that the âloyal and strongâ Pierre Gagnaire had joined him in the project.
Gagnaire said: âWhen I first spoke with Mourad immediately I felt it was the possibility to weave an incredible story. And it is incredible. Each time I come there is always something different in the details. Itâs so pleasant to work like that.
âThis is a sketch, itâs not finished, but we can say we have the roots for more success.â
