Cornwall hotel closed after fire causes significant damage

The owners of the Old Coastguard in Mousehole have said the hotel will be closed until further notice after fire caused significant damage to the fabric of the building.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue were called to the Eatdrinksleep-owned 14-bedroom property on Tuesday night after reports of a blaze. The hotel was full and all 28 guests were evacuated and rehoused at local hotels.

Joint owner Edmund Inkin said that the source of the fire was yet to be established.

He added: "We're at the very early stage of working through with Cornwall Fire & Rescue to understand what caused the fire. We'd like to thank them for their work last night in ensuring that the fire was extinguished rapidly and damage limited. We hope to have a better idea of when we can re-open in the next day or two, but there has been fairly significant damage to the fabric of some parts of the building.

"For the moment, our over-riding thought is that what matters more than anything is that all of our guests emerged safely from the building. At first sight, it appears that all of our fire safety systems and processes worked well to ensure their safety. We'd like to thank them for their unbelievable understanding last night when their sleep was interrupted."

The Old Coastguard will be closed for the foreseeable future while restorative work is completed.
