Cateys 2019: chef Shaun Hill and hotelier Ken McCulloch carry off top accolades

Chef Shaun Hill and hotelier Ken McCulloch carried off the two top accolades at the Cateys 2019.

McCulloch, 70, was honoured with the Special Award for his visionary work in creating Glasgow's One Devonshire Gardens, as well as launching two ground-breaking brands, Malmaison and Dakota. He has made an indelible mark on the British hotel scene, creating hotels that "led the zeitgeist of the time".

The awards were presented in front of an audience of 1,200 at London's Grosvenor House, a JW Marriott hotel, on Tuesday evening. The ceremony was held in partnership with Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division.

The evening saw both chef Paul Ainsworth and general manager of the Royal Lancaster London, Sally Beck, recognised with two Cateys apiece.

Ainsworth, behind No 6 and Rojano's in the Square in Padstow, as well as the Mariners in Rock, walked away with both the Chef and Restaurateur of the Year - Independent awards, after judges described his past 12 months as "truly phenomenal", praising him for building up "the most stylish and impressive family of restaurants".

Beck was presented with the Manager of the Year Award and Accessibility Award, for her work at the Royal Lancaster London, after being described as "one of the most naturally gifted and inspirational leaders of her time".

South America's leading chef and restaurateur, Francis Mallmann, received the International Outstanding Achievement Award. The chef has gained global acclaim for the theatrical and stripped-back feasts he cooks over open fires on his private Patagonian island at the world's most remote cookery school.

Other winners of the evening included Hawksmoor, which was named Restaurateur of the Year - Group; the Ned in London, which won the Hotel of the Year - Group Award; Rudding Park in Harrogate, which was presented with the Hotel of the Year - Independent Award; and Vacherin's Phil Roker, who walked away with the Foodservice Caterer Award.
