Mitch Tonks calls for action after repeated bomb scares in Brixham harbour

Mitch Tonks, the chef restaurateur behind Rockfish, has called for systems to be introduced on the harbour after a series of bomb scares that have become a "regular occurrence".

Hundreds of customers were forced to evacuate his Brixham site after trawlers found munitions in the nearby waters.

The bomb, which prompted the arrival of a disposal unit scare was the fifth to take place in the harbour in the past two months.

Now Tonks has called for the introduction of a specified area for suspected munitions, arguing the emergence of potential explosives was becoming far too frequent.

He said: "There was another bomb brought in by fishermen which had been left on top of the diesel tanks in the harbour, this caused concern and the area was closed until the bomb was made safe.

"This has become a regular occurrence with an average of a bomb every two months or so. Some have had to be taken out to sea and detonated so there is a real risk.

"We feel there should be a dedicated bomb landing area where they can be placed safely until the bomb disposal squad can arrive rather than the middle of the town which has to be closed off at cost to local business."
