Brits want hotels to ban plastic bags and bottles

Brits would most like hotels to replace plastic carrier bags and bin bags and plastic water bottles with greener alternatives.

That is according to a survey of 1,528 people by airport taxi transfer service taxi2airport.com to find out the commonly used plastic items in hotel guests would most like to see replaced with a sustainable or environmentally friendly option.

When it came to plastic bags, 85% said they would like hotels to replace them with compostable bags, reusable carrier bags or paper bags; while 79% would appreciate hotels providing water in refillable glass or aluminium bottles.

Instead of plastic pens, 66% would like hotels to use and provide wooden or bamboo pens instead, and 61% would like a reusable cotton or linen laundry bag instead of a plastic one.

Meanwhile, half of respondents believe plastic ‘do not disturb’ hangers should be replaced by wood or bamboo hangers; but just 26% think courtesy slippers should be provided in a cotton or linen wrap or bag.

Yoon Sterkenburg, co-Founder of Taxi2Airport.com, said: “Hotels can be the key drivers within the hospitality and leisure sector to adopt and promote eco-friendly initiatives… The findings are encouraging for hotels with serious intentions to decrease their plastic consumption but worried about the impact it will have on the level of service they provide as well as overall customer satisfaction by doing so. The key takeaway for hotels is that reducing plastic use is a valuable practise that is only going to lead to positive outcomes”.
