British-inspired restaurant set to open at Apex hotel City of London

A new all-day dining restaurant is set to open in the Apex hotel City of London on Seething Lane in September.

Inspired by authentic British cuisine and locally-sourced produce, the Lampery will serve a Best of British menu that celebrates the diverse and eclectic mix that represents today's indigenous cuisine.

The Lampery takes its name from 17th century MP and diarist Samuel Pepys, who was a former resident of Seething Lane. Pepys' favourite meal was Lampery ‘pye', made with slow braised beef cheek and prunes.

Headed by chef Richie Hobdel, the Lampery's menu will include a thick pea and ham soup inspired by the ‘peasouper' fogs that used to engulf London, and the Lampery ‘pye'.

The restaurant will feature a cocktail bar and terrace, with the cocktail menu serving new takes on classic cocktails including the Red Snapper, a twist on the Bloody Mary; and Not Your Pepys's Manhattan, a combination of Woodford Reserve, Jim Beam, Licor 43, Martini Rosso and orange bitters. There will also be an extensive wine and beer selection available.

A menu of small plates will be served daily from lunchtime onward in the bar and on the terrace, including rarebit crumpet bread, treacle pickled quail's eggs, black pepper and thyme sausage rolls with homemade ketchup and white asparagus with almond mayonnaise.

Guests will also be able to enjoy breakfast daily with dishes such as Scotch oats with a side of apricot and cardamom or sourdough toast with London honey; a classic English breakfast made with locally-sourced ingredients and the addition of goose fat potato rostis and homemade beans; and an omelette Arnold Bennett, featuring smoked haddock, hollandaise, gruyere and chives.
