Borough Market, which celebrates 21 years as a hub of the London food scene this November, is to launch a new venture called the Borough Market Kitchen, showcasing over 20 food traders.
The Borough Market Kitchen will create a new communal dining space housed in Jubilee Place. While Borough Market has long been known for its street food stalls, seating has previously been unavailable for many.
Now traders like La Tua Pasta and Horn OK will join newcomers like Singaporean food stall Mei Mei from former Pidgin chef Elizabeth Haigh and a pintxos bar from Mimo London to serve their food there each lunchtime at long tables.
Around 30% of the ingredients will be sourced directly from the market itself, which was relaunched in 1998 and through the likes of Brindisa and Neal’s Yard Dairy has sealed its reputation as a food destination.
The covered Jubilee Place currently serves as the market’s wholesale area, and once Borough Market Kitchen closes after lunch, it will revert to that function.
The Borough Market Kitchen will be constructed from recycled sustainable materials and will be entirely single-use-plastic free.
Managing director Darren Henaghan said: “Borough Market has a proud heritage stretching back over 1,000 years, and the 21st anniversary of our opening to the public marks a modern coming of age for both the market and its traders.
“Our continuing commitment to delivering wonderful produce to everyone who comes through our doors is encapsulated in all the innovative plans we have for this year. The Borough Market Kitchen will be a new space for London to come and eat together, a community hub for the market, showcasing the incredible diversity of our produce and bringing together some of our market pioneers with exciting new traders.”
