Budock Vean Hotel in Cornwall has been sold for the first time in 40 years to the owner of Boringdon Hall in Devon.

The historic property, which has been occupied since 1538, went on the market in November 2023 with a £7m price tag.

It has been acquired by Philema Hospitality Management, which also owns Newquay’s four-AA-star Esplanade Hotel and the four-AA-star Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa.

The group has owned Boringdon Hall in Plymouth since 2011 and has developed it into a five-AA-star hotel which is home to the Michelin-starred Àclèaf restaurant.

Budock Vean is a 50-room hotel located on the banks of the Helford River that has been owned by the Barlow family for 37 years. It is set in 65 acres of gardens and features its own golf course, spa, self-catering holiday homes and tennis courts.

The hotel hosted writer Virginia Woolf in 1936 when she complimented the area in a letter to her nephew.

"Budock Vean is a truly unique property with a deep-rooted history in Cornwall’s hospitality landscape,” said Laura Cameron, managing director of Philema Hospitality Management.

“We look forward to honouring its legacy while bringing new innovations that will elevate its charm and appeal for today’s discerning travellers.

"Our vision is to create unforgettable guest experiences that celebrate Cornwall’s heritage and natural beauty, and Budock Vean aligns perfectly with this mission."

Philema Hospitality Management was named one of The Caterer’s top 30 Best Places to Work in Hospitality in 2022.
