Antico Bermondsey to close after half a decade

Italian restaurant Antico in Bermondsey will be closing down next month due to rising costs.

The restaurant announced the closure on Twitter last night (30 August) stating: "We are sad to announce that Antico will be closing 24th Sept. We'd like to send a heartfelt thanks for your support and custom over the years."

No one was available to comment at the restaurant when approached by The Caterer, however replying to questions on Twitter, Antico said that "rising costs makes Antico difficult to sustain".

"It's been a hard decision but we hope our days in hospitality aren't quite over yet." It added.

Antico was founded by Nick Crispini on Bermondsey Street in 2012. It offered Italian comfort food and showcased high quality ingredients in simple dishes using classic techniques and recipes.

Antico's sister site, 214 Bermondsey gin and cocktail bar, is unaffected and will be closing on 24 September for refurbishment.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that rising business rates are the biggest worry for restaurant and bar business leaders, according to CGA Peach's 2017 Business Leaders' Survey.

Yesterday, Pizza Express reported a drop in EBITDA during the 26 weeks to 2 July 2017 due to cost pressures in the UK market, including business rates, pay rates and food inflation.
