AA reveals cereal as the nation's favourite breakfast

A new report by the AA has announced the UK's top breakfast choices, as the group reveals it will name the Breakfast of the Year at its B&B Awards next month.

Cereal came out the favourite of the nationwide poll, followed by toast, a cooked breakfast/full English, and porridge.

Cooked breakfast is most popular in Wales, where one in four respondents chose it as their favourite; while eggs are the top choice in London (13%) and pastries are most popular in Scotland (12%). Avocado, while the least popular choice among respondents for breakfast, was the favourite of respondents in the East Midlands (3%).

Adults aged 55+ are the most likely to eat breakfast daily, with 73% saying they never skip it. Meanwhile, only 39% of 18- to 24-year-olds and 38% of 25- to 34-year-olds have breakfast every day, with one in 10 of those aged 25-34 never eating breakfast.

Porridge is most popular with those aged 55+, with 17% of respondents saying it was their favourite breakfast and is also more popular with over-55s than any other age group. A cooked breakfast or full English is most popular among those aged 44-54 (18%).

Cereal is most popular with 35-to 44-year-olds, with this age group also showing the most love for toast and yogurt at breakfast time, whereas granola is the favourite choice among 25-to 34-year-olds.

Simon Numphud, managing director at AA Hotel & Hospitality Services, said: "It's interesting to see the UK's tastes in breakfast, and with such varied tastes across the country and across generations, we're sure the UK's 20,000 B&Bs will have something for everyone. We're looking forward to revealing the first ever winner of the AA Breakfast of the Year Award in April."

The AA B&B Awards take place on 30 April 2019.
