The winners of The Caterer’s 2023 Hotel Cateys were revealed on Monday night, with outgoing Whatley Manor general manager Sue Williams honoured with the Outstanding Contribution Award.
Williams is one of the most respected hoteliers in the UK. Since joining Whatley Manor from Cliveden House in 2016 she has overseen a major sustainability drive at the hotel and become a leading industry voice on green issues. She will step down from the hotel this month to take on a consultancy role.
Northcote managing director Craig Bancroft described Williams as one of the “greatest hoteliers in the true sense of the word”.
He added: “A charismatic and forthright leader who leads from the front. She is genuine and sincere in all that she does and has achieved.
“Sue’s decision to take on the sustainability narrative long before anyone else took notice was groundbreaking, but more her tenacity to see it through in the way that she has is nothing short of exemplary.”
Exclusive Hotels managing director Danny Pecorelli said Williams was a “true leader of the hospitality industry” who had helped launch many people’s careers.
Nominees from across the hotel industry gathered for the awards ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on Monday night.
The Ritz London took home two awards for its exemplary service, winning Front of House Team of the Year, while Ailsa Le Poidevin was named Front of House Manager of the Year.
South Lodge scooped the award for Sustainable Hotel of the Year, while Woven by Adam Smith at Coworth Park took home the trophy for Hotel Restaurant Team of the Year.
The hotel chef awards went to Michael Paul of Nobu Hotel London Portman Square (more than 250 covers); Will Holland at the Atlantic hotel (fewer than 250 covers); and Mathew Sherry at Number One, the Balmoral (Hotel Restaurant Chef of the Year).
