Steaks served in pub chains claiming to be beef actually contain meat from the zebu, a breed of humped-back cow found in Brazil, Africa and Asia, an investigation has found.
JD Wetherspoon and Greene King have been accused by ITV's Undercover Mum programme, to be shown tonight at 8pm, after steaks were found containing DNA from the zebu.
Four out of six Wetherspoon pubs were found to be selling steak with Zebu DNA, including one which contained 67% DNA from the humped cattle, while three out of nine of Greene King's Hungry Horse pubs also served Zebu meat. Neither operator had identified the origin of the meat on their menu's.
The English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) excluded Zebu meat from its quality standard beef scheme in July
