Number of hospitality and catering outlets – Industry data

The number of UK hospitality and catering outlets dropped marginally in 2008 to 262,134 establishments, down from 263,053 the previous year.

 

The steepest fall was seen in the pub sector, where outlet numbers dropped by 2.9%, while hotels suffered a marginal decline. Restaurants, on the hand, continued the year-on-year increase in numbers seen since 2003.

 

The total number of meals served in 2008 fell by 2.8% to 8.5 billion. Although numbers grew marginally in the cost sector, total meals fell across all the profit sectors. Hardest hit were restaurants, with meal numbers down by 4.5%, followed by quick-service restaurants (-3.3%) and hotels (-1.8%). The decline in the pub and leisure market was marginal.

 

Food and drinks sales, however, continued to grow slowly except in restaurants and pubs. The average price per meal grew across all profit sectors, by 4.4% in hotels (to £11.88) and by 4% in restaurants, to £11.98.

 

The figures cover both the profit sector (which includes hotels, restaurants, quick-service outlets, pubs and leisure venues) and the cost sector comprising catering in business and industry, healthcare, education and Ministry of Defence sites.
