The restaurateur behind Chew On This will be launching the 74-cover Shanghai-style diner next month
Ellen Chew will be opening her third Shan Shui restaurant next month, this time in central London.
The 74-cover Shan Shui Social in Victoria will offer a diverse cocktail menu alongside a selection of Cantonese dim sum, roast meats and Sichuan dishes.
The restaurant has been designed by studio Macaulay Sinclair and is spread across two floors, featuring the hallmarks of 1920s Shanghai, such as traditional wood panelling, neon signage, porcelain mosaic floors and art deco accents.
It comes after the Chew On This restaurateur launched Singapulah in London’s Chinatown last year, which works closely with Singaporean suppliers.
Commenting on Shan Sui Social, Chew said: “Our existing sites for Shan Shui, at Heathrow Terminal 2 and Bicester Village, have both successfully catered to the demands of tourists, travellers and shoppers. With Shan Shui Social, we can serve city dwellers, theatre-goers and appeal to the working crowd.
“Sustainability is extremely important to us. The kitchen at Shan Shui Social will be fully electric to reduce carbon emissions and to provide a safe and comfortable environment for our staff. We also aim to source the best ingredients from local producers.”
Chew made her London debut in 2008 with the launch of Chinatown’s Malaysian-Singaporean restaurant Rasa Sayang and has since grown her portfolio to also include Mrs Chew’s Chinese Kitchen in London’s Stratford and Birmingham, the Shan Shui brand and Singapulah.
She also partners with Arôme Bakery in London’s Covent Garden and Duke Street, as well as Lobos Tapas in Soho and London Bridge.
