Welsh Rugby Union's plans for Cardiff hotel approved

The Welsh Rugby Union's plans to convert a former post office and court buildings into a luxury hotel have been given the green light by Cardiff Council.

The authority's planning committee granted permission for the conversion of the buildings into the 175-bedroom Westgate hotel, including the construction of a new seven-storey extension.

The hotel, to be operated by the Celtic Collection, is a joint venture between the WRU and property developer Rightacres.

Located near the Principality Stadium, it will feature "one of the largest function rooms" in the city, capable of seating 350 guests, as well as a bar, a 120-cover restaurant, and a spa with a swimming pool and "views over the city".

The project is being funded by Legal & General as part of its ongoing investment into the regeneration of Central Square.

A launch date of December 2020 has been slated.
