Wadworth brewery buys Bird in Hand inn for £2.25m

Wiltshire-based brewery Wadworth & Company has acquired the Bird in Hand country inn near Reading for approximately £2.25m.

The 14th century property has 22 bedrooms, a bar, restaurant and private dining areas. Privately owned for several decades by Caroline Shone, Colliers International acted for Shone in an off market sale to Wadworth's, a regional family brewer that operates more than 220 pubs.

Paul Barrasford, director of hotels agency at Colliers International, said: "Wadworth's has a great heritage within the brewery industry, and the Bird in Hand is an ideal fit with their estate of award-winning pubs."

Rupert Bagnall, operations director at Wadworth & Company, said: "The Bird in Hand will be an excellent addition to our expanding portfolio of award-winning properties."

Caroline Shone added: "Colliers has done a fantastic job in putting this deal together. Wadworth is a perfect fit for the Bird in Hand and I believe they are the right company to take the business forward."
