TUCO annual conference to focus on sustainability

The University Caterers Organisation (TUCO) has announced that its 2013 annual conference will focus on sustainability when it meets next month.

Keynote speakers will include Jane Davidson, former Minister for the Environment and Sustainability in Wales, at the conference, which will run from 22 to 25 July at the University of South Wales, Treforest.

Charles Secrett, former head of Friends of the Earth England, Rich Neumann of US membership body the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS), a representative from the Waste Reduction Awards Programme (WRAP) and Cotswold chef Rob Rees are also confirmed to speak.

Presentations will range from how to deliver best practice in sustainable kitchens through to advice on social media for sustainable marketing.

Julie Barker, TUCO managing director, said she believes the event will be a valuable and informative platform for university caterers and suppliers to help them understand the difference they can make by embracing sustainability.

"Environmental issues have long been top of the agenda politically and socially, and today it is widely accepted that sustainability makes good business sense," she explained.

"University caterers have a balancing act to manage in terms of achieving value and quality for students, whilst also considering their environmental impact of their work, and I am certain these informative and inspiring sessions will provide practical ideas and advice to help them achieve this even more effectively."
