The Beaumont to expand by 29 bedrooms

The new owners of the Beaumont hotel in London intend to add 29 bedrooms to the Mayfair property.

Plans are in the pipeline to apply to the City of Westminster council for permission to extend the five-AA-star hotel from its current 73 bedrooms. A spokesperson for the hotel said that there are no further details available at present.

Ellerman Hotel Company (EHC), owned by the Barclay family, bought the leasehold of the property last summer, four years after the hotel was opened by restaurateurs Chris Corbin and Jeremy King. Grosvenor is the freeholder of the building.

News of the Beaumont's expansion emerged as details of the refurbishment of the American bar were revealed. The newly-named Magritte bar has been designed by Nina Campbell with the addition of "vibrancy, colour and comfort…enhancing the existing handsome, clubby interior, whilst retaining its cosy, casually elegant 1930s ambience".

The new-look bar features a selection of paintings and original posters, some from the 1920s and 1930s, with Le Maitre d'École (1954) from Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte taking centre stage, alongside an extensive library of books from independent Mayfair bookseller Heywood Hill.

The long, dark bronze and gold-flecked marble bar has been preserved, as have the dark-timber panelling and tobacco brown leather chairs. Colour has been introduced by rich sapphire blue velvet banquettes and new chairs in soft blues, reds and subtle golds.

The menu of classic drinks is still in place, alongside a new all-day menu featuring small plates of comfort food.

The bar remains as an entry to the unchanged Colony Grill restaurant.
