A family-run Scottish fish and chip shop is on the hunt for its first apprentice fish frier, with applications due to close on 31 August.
East Coast Fish & Chips takeaway in Musselburgh, East Lothian, has launched a 12-week apprenticeship programme for people looking to kickstart a career in the fish and chip industry with support from the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF).
The successful candidate will receive hands-on experience at the 48-year-old restaurant, intensive training on how to prepare fish dishes and opportunities to visit local fish suppliers.
East Coast Fish & Chips is owned and operated by Carlo and Katia Crolla, who have been serving fish and chips for the community for almost half a century.
Carlo said: “We’re really excited to have teamed up with the National Federation of Fish Friers to launch our new fish frier apprenticeship.
“As well as getting hands-on experience preparing and cooking fish and chips inside our award-winning, family-run takeaway and restaurant, the apprentice will also get the chance to learn more about the wider industry in the 12-week training period.
“It’s a physical and demanding job, but we’re a close, friendly team and we love what we do. We’re ultimately looking for someone who is up for the challenge, is friendly, hard-working, works well under pressure and is as passionate about the ultimate fish supper as we are.”
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, added: “It’s great to see fish and chip businesses providing structured training with recognised qualifications. It is a fantastic industry to work in and gives people working in it the confidence and skills that will stay with them for life.”
