Man arrested after eight-hour police stand-off at Bognor Regis hotel

A man has been arrested following an eight-hour stand-off with police at a hotel in Bognor Regis.

Officers were called to the Royal Norfolk Hotel in the Sussex seaside town at 9.28am yesterday (Monday) following reports of a man in distress in possession of a large knife.

Members of hotel staff, the only other people in the building, left safely and a cordon was set up to protect the public.

A specialist negotiator was sent to the scene and at 5.30pm a 37-year-old local man was arrested by armed officers on suspicion of affray.

No one suffered any injuries and no shots were fired.

Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw said: "There was a significant police presence, but it was an isolated incident contained to the hotel and there was no threat to the wider community.”
