Restaurant Sat Bains named fourth best rated restaurant in the world

The website’s Traveller’s Choice awards saw chef Sat Bains' eponymous restaurant feature among the world's top 25, alongside Adam Stokes’ Adam’s in Birmingham and Raymond Blanc’s Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons in Great Milton, Oxfordshire, who were rated 11th and 15th respectively.

The world’s best rated restaurant was Au Crocodile in France, which holds one Michelin star under head chef Franck Pelux.

Two-Michelin starred Restaurant Sat Bains topped the UK rankings [see top 10 below] for the first time, having taken sixth place in 2014 and second in 2015.

Commenting on the news, joint owners Sat and Amanda Bains, said: "We have always believed in our team and our location, and we feel both the kitchen brigade and front of house team we have currently are the strongest we have ever had. It's very flattering to receive such high praise from our guests, and we are immensely proud to fly the flag, not just for our home city of Nottingham and the Midlands, but the UK too. To be among restaurants of such high calibre in the world ranking is extremely humbling. It's an honour to be recognised and it will inspire us to keep pushing to deliver the ultimate in gastronomy.

“There will certainly be extra celebrations at our Christmas party this month!”

The Travellers’ Choice awards are compiled using an algorithm that studies the quality and quantity of millions of reviews left on TripAdvisor over a 12-month period.

Hayley Coleman, a TripAdvisor spokesperson, said: “The UK continues to cement itself as one of the biggest players in the global gastronomy scene.”

Tommy Bank’s Black Swan at Oldstead, North Yorkshire, last year named the world’s best-rated restaurant, has been knocked out of the worldwide top 10 but has taken fifth place in the UK’s top 10.

For the first time the review site has also ranked ‘everyday dining’ restaurants with Makars Gourmet Mash Bar in Edinburgh taking the accolade for its impressive variations on mash potato.

The UK’s top rated fine dining restaurants on TripAdvisor were:

  1. Restaurant Sat Bains, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
  2. Adam’s, Birmingham, Midlands
  3. Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Great Milton, Oxfordshire
  4. L’Enclume, Cartmel, Cumbria
  5. The Black Swan at Oldstead, Oldstead, North Yorkshire
  6. Waterside Inn, Bray on Thames, Berkshire
