Plans to allow hospitality venues to stay open longer for Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Pubs, bars and clubs could be allowed to stay open for an extra two hours to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Under government plans, venues could be allowed to keep serving customers until 1am during the extended bank holiday weekend in June.

Home secretary, Priti Patel, is seeking to extend licensing hours from 11pm from Thursday 2 June until Saturday 4 June.

A series of celebrations, including a concert, a Service of Thanksgiving, and nationwide street parties, will be held over the four-day bank holiday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the monarch’s reign.

Section 172 of the Licensing Act 2003 allows the Home Secretary to make a licensing hours order, giving permission to premises to open for extended hours to mark occasions of exceptional international, national or local significance.

The proposed extension will be subject to a month’s public consultation, which will also seek the views of the police, licensing authorities and alcohol awareness groups.

Past national occasions where the government has extended licensing hours have included the royal wedding in 2018, the Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016 and the FIFA World Cup in 2014.
