Pret A Manger axes plan to double price of £5 coffee subscription

The chain overhauled its subscription last year after admitting it was "too good to be true"

Pret A Manger has reversed plans to double the price of its coffee subscription scheme next month.

The coffee chain has told its Club Pret members they will still be able to get 50% off up to five barista-made drinks a day for £5 a month.

Previously, the subscription was due to increase to £10 a month from 31 March.

In an email to subscribers, Pret said: “At Pret, we believe in offering high-quality, organic coffee and Barista-made drinks at fantastic value. With Club Pret, you’ll continue to enjoy great savings on up to five Barista-made drinks per day.

“Thank you for being part of Club Pret. We love serving you and hope to see you in our shops very soon.”

The coffee chain launched its Club Pret scheme four years ago in a bid to lure back customers after the coronavirus pandemic.

In early 2024 it offered five hot or iced barista-made drinks a day and a 20% discount on food for members paying £30 a month.

But Pret overhauled the scheme last year after admitting it had seemed “too good to be true”.

This included axing the 20% discount on food, which Pret’s UK and Ireland managing director Clare Clough said the chain had "never really got comfortable with".

Pret’s sales exceeded £1b for the first time last year following its rapid expansion overseas into countries including Canada, India, Greece, Spain and the US.

The chain underwent a shake-up of its operations last year with co-founder Sinclair Beecham returning to the fold as part of a senior team reshuffle. Pret also closed the last of its once-hyped vegetarian-only stores and launched its first children’s menu in a bid to attract more families into its cafes.

Leon mounted a challenge to Pret last summer with the launch of its own rival coffee subscription, offering users up to five barista-made drinks a day for £25 a month.
