Jasmine Ferdinando and Geraldine Sierra Torres have been crowned winners of the 36th annual Nestlé Professional Toque d’Or.

The competition sees hospitality students from across the country compete in a series of challenges, culminating in an awards ceremony where two winners are selected from the 12 finalists. Ferdinando, the front of house winner, studies at York College, while Sierra Torres hails from Westminster Kingsway College.

The Grand Finals week, held from 21 to 25 April, saw competitors showcase their skills, energy and passion in topics focused on sustainability.

Sodexo set a ‘farm-to-fork’ challenge where the students learned about regenerative agriculture and how hospitality plays an important role in supporting communities.

A coffee challenge was held at Starbucks, while FOH finalists received a masterclass in the art of cocktail making with competition partner Nestlé Waters (San Pellegrino).

The Fine Dining Challenge saw FOH and BOH competitor work together to create and serve a menu crafted by chef Tommy Banks.

Sierra Torres, said: “This is such a surreal moment for me. Ever since I was a child, I remember cooking with my grandmother in the kitchen at home. She inspired me to pursue my passion for cooking, which has ultimately led me to where I am today.”

Ferdinando, said: “I know it sounds like a cliche, but when I first entered the competition I never thought I would get this far. I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity, to meet so many amazing people and to develop great friendships along the way.”

As part of their prize, the pair will travel to Switzerland to visit the Nestlé headquarters, learn more about culinary arts and receive masterclasses and tours, including one of the chocolate factory.

Katya Simmons, managing director of Nestlé Professional UK&I, said: “This year’s Toque d’Or competition has demonstrated just how much young talent there is in hospitality.”
