Plans have been submitted to open the UK’s first hotel under Accor and Ennismore’s Mama Shelter brand outside of London.
Landlab Developments is looking to transform the historic George Henry Lee building in Liverpool city centre into a 175-room hotel.
Plans also include the development of a cinema, karaoke booths, games bar, bowling alley, gym, roof terrace and a sky bar and restaurant at the hotel.
The nine-storey, 153,203 sq ft building opened as a department store in 1853 but has been mostly vacant for around 15 years after previous occupier John Lewis moved to Liverpool ONE.
Planning consultancy Roman Summer, which submitted the plans, said the development would be expected to create around 150 new jobs.
Mama Shelter was founded in Paris in 2008 by Serge Trigano and his two sons, Jérémie and Benjamin, as a design-led brand featuring graphic carpets, graffiti ceilings and cartoon masks used as lampshades.
The urban lifestyle brand now has a presence in 14 cities worldwide, including Los Angeles, Paris, Rome, Lisbon, and Prague.
The UK’s first Mama Shelter hotel opened in London’s Shoreditch (pictured) in 2019 and features karaoke rooms and a garden bar.
Accor took a stake in the brand in 2014 and it now forms part of its lifestyle division under the Ennismore umbrella.
