Legionnaires' disease linked to Melville Hall Hotel & Utopia Spa on Isle of Wight confirmed

The spa and swimming pool at the Melville Hall Hotel & Utopia Spa on the Isle of Wight hotel have been closed after a person diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease was linked to the premises.

The 29-bedroom hotel in Sandown, which is described as “exclusively for adults”, is being investigated by the environmental health department of the Isle of Wight Council and Public Health England after “an undesirable level” of Legionella bacterium was found.

A council spokesperson said: “Enforcement action has been undertaken to eliminate the risk which has included the hotel taking measures to close both facilities pending ongoing investigations.”

“It can be confirmed that one case of Legionnaires’ disease has been linked to the hotel spa/pool facilities. The prohibition notices served will continue to remain in place until satisfactory measures have been undertaken and verified."

Public Health England had recommended that any guests who have used the indoor swimming pool develop flu-like symptoms or breathing difficulties within 14 days of their stay should contact their GP.

A spokesperson for the hotel told the On the Wight website: "Our guests' health and safety is our highest priority.

"The environmental health service is obliged to check all hotels on the island. Naturally, we will work with them during our ongoing refurbishment program to further enhance our superb facilities."

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious lung infection which can be caught by inhaling droplet of water from things like air conditioning or hot tubs.
