JD Wetherspoon to open Euston pub after £2.3m investment

JD Wetherspoon is to open the Captain Flinders pub near Euston station in London this week after a £2.3m investment.

The group has taken over the former SophistiCats club on the corner of Eversholt Street and Doric Way and plan to open to guest on 9 January.

The Captain Flinders is named after a Royal Navy explorer whose remains were discovered by archaeologists working at the Euston station redevelopment. He led the first circumnavigation of Australia (1801–1803) and is credited with giving the country its name, though he wasn’t the first to use the term.

The pub will feature a carpet that draws its design inspiration from Euston station with cable patterns, as well as hidden cat faces to celebrate Trim, Captain Flinders’ pet who accompanied him on his expeditions.

The interior colour scheme of the pub will reference the design of Euston’s Great Hall, with plaster pink tones against the blue of the ceiling. Historical photos as well as artwork and images of local scenes will also be on display.

The new pub will be managed by Samantha Pugh. She said: “Myself and my team are looking forward to welcoming customers into the Captain Flinders.

“We are confident that the pub will be a great addition for those travelling in and out of Euston Station as well as local people.”
