Investigation to take place into Isle of Wight hotels fire

An investigation is to take place into the cause of a fire that spread across two hotels on the Isle of Wight yesterday.

A blaze spread across the 50-bedroom Tarvic2 and 66-bedroom Hotel Maria/St Moritz hotels in Sandown yesterday. Approximately 80 guests were evacuated safely and alternative accommodation has been provided.

Isle of Wight Radio has reported the Tarvic 2 and St Moritz have been "destroyed" by the fire, while the adjoining Hotel Maria suffered bad smoke damage.

The Hotel Maria/St Moritz hotels are understood to have been bought by Julion Jayerajah just three weeks ago.

He told Isle of Wight Radio: "We're really not sure [if we will reopen] at the moment. Obviously, we'd like to but the reality of the fact is we won't know too much until we hear back from the fire investigation."

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two appliances from Newport Fire Station, including the aerial appliance, have returned to the scene this morning (Monday) to carry out site checks. A full investigation into the incident will be carried out, with a fire investigation team due to arrive on site this morning."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Hazardous Area Response Team of the South Central Ambulance Service both attended the incident as well as Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue and Ambulance services.

The Tarvic2 and Hotel Maria/St Moritz hotels have been contacted for comment.
