Gunpowder duo to launch third restaurant next month

Harneet and Devina Baweja, the team behind Indian restaurant Gunpowder and Madame D's, both in Spitalfields, east London, are to launch their third restaurant.

 

The 50-cover Indian restaurant Gul and Sepoy is expected to open next month on Commercial Street, also in Spitalfields.

 

The menu will be divided into two sections, Sepoy (which translates to soldiers) and Gul which takes its name from the famous courtesan of the King of Punjab, Gul Begum, who counted cooking for the King among her duties.

 

Seopy will reflect executive chef Nirmal Save's modern style of cooking dishes associated with the Indian army such as: masala wild rabbit terrine with celeriac and fig; potted coorgi pig's head; and wild berries and lavender kheer.

 

The Gul menu will be inspired by the age-old banquets of the Raj palaces in North-Western India. Dishes include: three bird's awadhi korma; jackfruit and walnut-ke-sheek and kid goat raan with pickled root vegetables.

 

Desserts will include rum soaked dough pillows with spiced cream cheese and berries and walnut fudge with baked alaska and salted caramel.

 

Harneet said: "Commercial Street feels like home. We've been so warmly welcomed over the past few years with Gunpowder and Madame D's and we're very much looking forward to embarking on our next adventure with the friends we've met so far. There's something really romantic and beautiful about the cooking of the Raj-days of old and we've found that those flavours and dishes harmonise particularly well with the more rustic cooking you'd commonly find in historic tales of Sepoys travelling through colonial India."

 

Spanning across two floors, Gul and Sepoy will feature an oak panelled bar on the ground floor and an upstairs dining room will feature large marble tables.

 

Harneet and Devina opened the 24-cover Gunpowder in November 2015 on White's Row, Spitalfields. Madame D's opened in April 2017 in Spitalfields, No.76 Commercial Street.
