Gul & Sepoy owners to open Custard bakery and Gunpowder at One Tower Bridge

Harneet and Devina Baweja, owners of London-based restaurants Gunpowder, Madame D and Gul & Sepoy are to launch two new ventures at One Tower Bridge this summer.

Inspired by the old coffee houses of Kolkata, where "people of all backgrounds and cultures would gather to share stories" the duo's first bakery and wine bar, Custard, is expected to open its doors in July at 4 Duchess Walk. A month later the pair will open a second Gunpowder site above the bakery.

The 40-cover Custard site will be open all day and serve breakfast, lunch, pre and post theatre snacks. Indian style food to eat in and take away will include butter chicken puffs, Bombay sandwiches, Goan Pork sausage rolls and mutton and egg sandwiches.

Harneet said: "I've been aching to launch a bakery for so long. In today's fast-paced society, we've completely lost the art of sitting down together and enjoying each other's company over something simple but delicious to eat and drink. I aim to bring that back. We've got a great location at Tower Bridge and I want to recreate the relaxed atmosphere of the old coffee houses of Kolkata."

Harneet and Devina's first venture was Gunpowder in Shoreditch, a home-food style Indian kitchen which launched in November 2015. Three years on they have announced a second is to open above the bakery at One Tower Bridge.

In partnership with executive chef Nirmal Save, Gunpowder is due to open in August. It will be open every day for lunch and dinner and won't take reservations.

Plates include: chicken lollipop Madras-style; masala peanut chaat and Bengali fish fingers with crisps and kasundi (Bengali mustard).

Harneet and Devina also own the Himalayan-style Madame D and casual Indian eatery Gul & Sepoy, both in London's Spitalfields.
