Plymouth City Council has granted planning permission for a new 80-bedroom hotel on the site of the former Quality hotel, adjacent to Plymouth Hoe.
Due to be complete in 2020, in time for the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth, the hotel will be named 1620 to commemorate the year of the voyage.
Private equity company Henley Real Estate was selected to undertake the development late last year by Plymouth City Council after it acquired the 0.9 hectare site, previously occupied by the demolished Quality hotel, in 2015. Construction is planned to begin this year.
The new hotel will sit alongside 88 new ocean-fronting apartments in the £50m scheme, and will also include two restaurants, a brasserie, a panoramic restaurant on the 11th floor overlooking Plymouth Sound, a ballroom, conference centre and luxury spa.
Henley Real Estate director Chris Henley said: "With unrivalled ocean views, each bedroom and public area has a panoramic aspect view to one of the world's best natural harbours."
