The Ringstead-based pub with rooms has been serving farmers, traders, fishermen and even smugglers since 1668.

The Chestnut Group has acquired the Gin Trap Inn in Norfolk as it seeks to promote the region as a culinary destination.

The group was founded by Philip Turner in 2013 and has since grown to over 15 pubs with rooms, including the Packhorse Inn in Moulton, Newmarket; the Black Lion in Long Melford; and the Ship at Dulwich, bringing the total number of rooms to almost 200.

The Gin Trap Inn adds a further 16 bedrooms to the business and marks its fourth Norfolk acquisition of 2024.

The Ringstead-based pub with rooms has been serving farmers, traders, fishermen and even smugglers since 1668 and was most recently in the hands of entrepreneur David Lamyman and chef-patron Gareth Rayner, who told The Caterer he liked to serve his “interpretation of classic flavours” during a Menuwatch earlier this year.

Turner said: “2024 has been a busy Norfolk year for the business. We take our role as a significant regional employer (excess 200 people) seriously and are keen to develop strong relationships with those promoting north Norfolk as the go-to destination. I have known the Gin Trap Inn for many years and feel privileged that Chestnut has the chance to be part of the future.”

Lamyman, vendor of the Gin Trap Inn, added: “We have taken the Gin Trap Inn to a new level since we acquired the business in 2019. Our great reputation is thanks to a very dedicated and hard-working team of people that know what our guests want and excel at delivering it.

“Having watched Chestnut grow by acquiring such quality venues and ensuring they individually thrive, I know that the Gin Trap will be in good hands. Thank you to all those that have supported us.”

Gin Trap team members will be welcomed to the group, while all guest room bookings and reservations will remain in place, the Chestnut group confirmed.
