Historic seaside hotel in Yorkshire closes due to ‘difficult trading conditions’

The Expanse Hotel & Marine Bar in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, has closed after almost 90 years of trading.

 

The hotel was developed by Edmond Cooper Briggs, a Horsforth local who would spend his annual holidays in Bridlington with his wife and nine children.

 

Briggs completed the construction of the 37-bedroom seafront hotel in time for its grand opening in March 1937. The building also included a block of self-contained luxury residential flats.

 

The property remained in the family and was most recently managed by the fourth generation, surviving World War II, four recessions, Brexit and the pandemic.

 

In a post on Facebook, the owners said: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce the closure of the Expanse Hotel & Marine Bar.

 

“The Expanse has remained in the same family since it was built in 1937 by our grandfather Edmond Cooper Briggs and continued by the 4th generation serving our beautiful Bridlington for nearly 90 years.

 

“We would like to express our gratitude to each and every one of you who have supported us over the years.”

 

The hotel cited “difficult trading conditions” as the reason behind its closure.

 

“We will continue to operate our apartments and residential flats. We now ask for your understanding and patience as we work to support our team,” the family added.
