The Dorchester to auction off more than 2,000 items ahead of major renovation

The Dorchester hotel in London is to auction off thousands of items for the first time in its 91-year history as part of a major renovation project.

The five-red-AA-star, 250-bedroom hotel, which remains open, began its biggest revamp since 1989 this year.

The first phase of the renovations are taking in the entrance to the hotel, the Promenade and the bar, plus two guest floors. Designer Pierre-Yves Rochon is reimagining the property's interiors, and Martin Brudnizki Design Studio is redesigning the hotel bar.

As part of the renovations, the Dorchester will be putting more than 2,000 items up for auction next month.

The two-day sale over 21 June and 22 June will see furnishings, artworks and accessories up for grabs.

Pieces on offer will include grand Murano blown glass chandeliers from Barovier&Toso, ottomans upholstered in velvet and silk, signed prints from HRH the Prince of Wales, and pieces from historic furniture-maker, Restall Brown & Clennell.

More unusual items, including hotel bed headboards and the contents of a bar designed by top French architect Thierry Despont, will also be made available.

The sale will run at the Dorchester, starting from 10.30am each day, with online bidding also available via a live webcast.

Proceedings will be overseen by Pro Auction. Auctioneer Simon Rose said: “This major renovation project for the hotel brings with it the opportunity to purchase a piece of the hotel's history.”

The Grill, Alain Ducasse and China Tang restaurants remain open for business as usual, as does the hotel spa.

The hotel is part of the Dorchester Collection, which also includes the five-red-AA-star, 45-bedroom 45 Park Lane and the five-AA-star, 71-bedroom Coworth Park in Berkshire.
