De Vere Tortworth Court unveils £5m refurbishment

The 201-bedroom De Vere Tortworth Court in Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire, is set to complete a £5m refurbishment as part of the wider multi-million pound upgrade of the group's estate of country hotels.

Previously owned by Four Pillars Hotels, the Grade II-listed Victorian property was part of a six-strong portfolio bought by Starwood Capital Group in 2014.

Set within a 30-acre estate featuring one of the UK's most impressive arboretums, De Vere Tortworth Court was designed by gothic revival architect Samuel Sanders Teulon for the 2nd Earl of Ducie in 1853.

The focus of the renovation has been in the mansion house, where former meeting rooms have been transformed into 11 suites, bringing the total number of bedrooms in the main house to 55. The rest of the bedrooms are located within a courtyard wing.

August will see the opening of the 1853 restaurant in what was at one time a church within the mansion house. It will feature original gothic panelling and serve a locally-sourced, British menu. The former library will host a new whiskey bar, while a pop-up outdoor bar will serve Pimms.

There are also 10 meeting rooms, a new gym and refurbished Peel Spa with six treatment rooms and indoor pool. In the wider estate, specially commissioned sculptures by artist Emma Stothard have been given pride of place.

Mark Payne, general manager at De Vere Tortworth Court, said: "The mansion house and the grounds provided us with a stunning base in which to enhance an existing beautiful product.

"The new-look hotel is one that I am very proud to welcome guests into and the introduction of large suites allows guests to indulge and live some of the grandeur that the original Earls would have enjoyed."

Tortworth Court is one of 24 hotels within the De Vere portfolio, which is the sister brand to the city -centre based Principal Hotels.
