Competition authority gives Heineken-Punch deal the go-ahead

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has given the green light to Heineken's planned £403m acquisition of Punch Taverns.

The CMA announced in June that the merger could reduce competition in 33 local areas across Great Britain and also looked at concerns that the deal would close off an important route to market for brewers that compete with Heineken.

However, the CMA announced today that it had now accepted undertakings from Heineken, addressing the CMA's concerns.

As such, the CMA said, no phase two investigation into the merger was necessary.

The deal is now expected to complete on 29 August this year.
