Cheshire's Mottram Hall snapped by by Champneys spa resort company

The 120-bedroom Mottram Hall hotel in Cheshire is to undergo a £10m refurbishment following its acquisition by spa resort group Champneys for an undisclosed sum.

Owned by Dorothy and Stephen Purdew, Champneys bought the hotel near Macclesfield from real estate investment company Aprirose, which had operated the property under the 26-strong QHotels portfolio since 2014. Built in 1721, Mottram Hall - set within a 270-acre estate - was transformed from a private residence to a hotel in 1940 and owned by the De Vere group from the mid-1970s to 2014.

The acquisition marks Champneys first foray into the north of the England, adding to its spa resort locations at Forest Mere, Hampshire; Henlow, Bedfordshire; Springs, Leicestershire; and Tring, Hertfordshire. In October 2017 Champneys also acquired the 62-bedroom Eastwell Manor hotel in Kent and has since applied for planning permission to add a 28-bedroom extension to the property.

The redevelopment of Mottram Hall will include a £5m redesign of the hotel's spa facilities involving the addition of 18 treatment rooms, alongside a new 20m swimming pool. There will also be the addition of 30 bedrooms, new conference facilities and an extension to the club house on the championship golf course.

The new look Mottram Hall, headed by general manager Deirdre Billing, is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Stephen Purdew said: "Mottram Hall gives our brand a broader geographical spread with a presence in the north west. It's a fantastic property and we're delighted to be adding it to our collection of properties within the Champneys group."

Alan Whiteley, managing director at Champneys, added: "Mottram Hall is a property I know well from my De Vere days, and a hotel that Stephen and I put on our radar four year ago. It's our ambition to make Mottram Hall the number one destination hotel and spa resort in the North West."
