Cookery school owner and Radio 4 panellist Angela Malik is to open a new Asian delicatessen in London's Ealing.
The Modern Asian Deli is set to open on 5 April, and will overlook Ealing Green. Housed in a former Budgens supermarket, the site has been entirely refurbished and will have window displays of British Asian fresh food, to eat in or takeaway.
It will be Malik's second Asian deli, as she already runs a site in London's Acton (which also delivers to local addresses), although this new site will feature some new recipes and dishes.
Available all day, the core selection will include salads, curries, pastries and desserts, as well as a range of Indian-inspired smoothies and shakes from the deli's "Lassi Bar". The deli will also offer gluten- and dairy-free options.
Breakfast choices will include porridge with honey, a bacon sandwich with homemade chutney, or mushroom and tomato "tikki". Lunchtime sandwiches will include chicken tikka, or marinated paneer with roasted peppers.
Malik plans to offer a takeaway lunch box named the "Duo Box": a healthy, balanced lunchtime meal based around a choice of protein (such as sticky pork, butter chicken curry, pork vindaloo or a vegetarian burger), and a choice of side salad such as alu gobi or courgette with thai basil & hazelnut, with optional rice on the side.
Other deli choices will include desserts such as the chilli chocolate brownie, and snacks such as masala sausage rolls, scotch eggs, garam masala popcorns and tamarind chutney.
A Scottish-Indian chef living in Ealing, Malik already runs an Asian delicatessen in London's Acton, and is a regular panellist on Radio 4's The Kitchen Cabinet. She started her cooking career at Leith's School of Food and Wine, and went on to open the Angela Malik Cook School in Cambridgeshire, in 2006.
In 2013, she secured funding to expand her deli brand across London.
Of the new site, she said: "I've long been a resident of the borough and I am so proud to be opening in the heart of beautiful Ealing. I am passionate about good, clean, great-tasting food and to be able to bring my cooking to life for the people of Ealing is a dream come true."
