Cause of fire that ripped through Beaverbrook golf club ‘unknown at this point’

Fire services have said that the cause of a fire that ripped through the golf club at Beaverbrook in Surrey is still unknown.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said it had received a call out to the fire on Monday night (7 March) at around 10pm. Crews remained at the scene throughout yesterday and began leaving the scene around 8.40am today, however some have remained behind to continue damping down hotspots.

The Club House has been significantly damaged by the fire but no one was injured. Beaverbrook hotel, including the House, the Coach House Spa and the Garden House restaurant were unaffected and so remain fully operational.

“I want to express our deepest gratitude to the Surrey Fire & Rescue Service for their professional response” said Jorge de Jesus, group general manager.

The club house for the 18-hole golf course, designed by five times Open winner Tom Watson and architect David McLay Kidd, opened on the 400-acre estate near Leatherhead in 2016; while the main hotel building opened in 2017. The property has been owned by Longshot since 2011.

The former home of media magnate and politician Lord Beaverbrook, which welcomed guests including Sir Winston Churchill and Elizabeth Taylor, underwent a £90m restoration and refurbishment to transform it into a luxury country house hotel.

Membership of the golf club is understood to cost in excess of six figures.
