CAU Liverpool blames food hygiene problems on building work displacing mice

A second Liverpool restaurant has blamed food hygiene issues on nearby construction work driving mice to its premises.

It has emerged that CAU Liverpool closed recently on a temporary basis after a mouse was found on the premises. The group said it could be due to construction work disturbing nesting mice.

The Carpathia restaurant at Signature Living's 30 James Street hotel nearby was also closed last week due to hygiene issues, which the company suggested were due to building works in the area dislodging mice.

Peter Brigden, interim operations director at the CAU Group, said: "As a result of the reported pest issue, we temporarily closed CAU Liverpool, and appointed a new pest control company to carry out an extensive report. Whilst we do not yet have confirmation of why a mouse found its way onto our premises, we have been advised it could be as a result of recent construction work nearby which may have disturbed nesting mice.

"As well as responding to the pest control report, a hygiene audit was undertaken by SHIELD Service Group alongside inspections by our own property team, and a preventative deep clean was carried out, in addition to the extensive daily cleaning schedule.

"Throughout the procedure, the environmental health officer (EHO) for Liverpool Council came to check that there was no further evidence of mice on the premises, and in compliance with the council's requirements for a period of three full days to confirm this, and to enable time for fresh food deliveries, we were able to open the restaurant on Friday.

"At CAU the cleanliness of all food preparation, washing and dining areas is paramount at all times, and we are pleased to confirm that Liverpool Council's EHO is satisfied with what we have undertaken at this restaurant."
