Calum Milne swaps Llangoed Hall for Aberdeen's Marcliffe hotel as general manager

Calum Milne, former general manager at Llangoed Hall near Brecon, Powys, has moved to Aberdeen's only hotel with a five star rating from VisitScotland.

He took over last month as general manager of the 40-bedroom Marcliffe hotel, which has been privately owned by Stewart Spence since 1993.

The move marks a return to Scotland for Milne after eight years. He moved to the four-red-AA-star, 23-bedroom Llangoed Hall, owned by the Interesting Hotel Group in 2012 after a two and a half year stint as general manager at Lower Slaughter Manor, Gloucestershire. He had previously worked at Inverlochy Castle in Fort William from 2007 to 2010.

Spence, who started his career in the hospitality industry in 1962, went on to buy his first hotel, the Atholl in Aberdeen, ten years later. He bought and sold a total of seven hotels before acquiring the Marcliffe, which was officially opened by the Princess Margaret before former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev performed the same ceremony when he was visiting Aberdeen after being awarded the freedom of the city.

Milne's first hotel position after university was at one of Spence's former hotels, Invery House, Banchory. "When Invery House was sold, I along with the other staff moved to Marcliffe to open the property," he said. "So returning here is most definitely a home coming. The hotel has been host to every current Prime Minister since it opened and is perfectly positioned for anyone who is passionate about golf or for the whisky trail."

Built in 1852 as a private residence, the Marcliffe today sits in eight acres of grounds alongside the River Dee.
