Begging Bowl to open second site in London

Thai restaurant Begging Bowl is to open a second site in London's West Brompton.

The first Begging Bowl opened in 2012 on 168 Bellenden Road, Peckham. It takes influences from food found on the streets of Chang Mai, Bangkok and Hua Hin.

More details on the West Brompton site are yet to be announced. However "the new location will be a fresh and exciting take on a Peckham Institution," Begging Bowl said.

Chefs at the Begging Bowl make as much as they can from scratch such as coconut cream, curry pastes, sauces and desserts.

Menu items include: stir-fry of morning glory, fermented yellow bean, chilli, garlic; palourde clams, ginger, celery, samphire, aromatic broth; taro, peanut coconut curry grilled on banana leaf, Thai basil; salad of grilled wood pigeon, fragola grape, chard, ginger, black vinegar dressing; and banana fritters, coconut sesame batter, tamarind, peanut brittle, turmeric custard.

Owner and chef Jane Alty partnered with Jamie Younger, formerly of Bibendum and the Wolseley, to open Begging Bowl after they saw a lack of Thai restaurant offerings in Peckham.

Critics such as Grace Dent said it was “a step up from many of London’s Thai restaurants” while Lisa Markwell said she would “come begging for more.”
