Armed police called to Cumbria hotel after man barricades himself in room

Armed police were called to a Cumbria hotel this morning following reports that a man had barricaded himself in a room with a woman.

Police forced their way into a room at the Imperial hotel in Cornwallis Street, Barrow-in-Furness, shortly after 1.20pm today, more than five hours after they had been called to the scene.

Negotiators had earlier been speaking to the man, but officers decided to force entry after concerns were raised for those inside.

A 21-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment.

Cumbria Police said he will require hospital treatment for self-inflicted injuries.

The 22-year-old woman who was with him in the room was uninjured.

The woman is understood to be known to the man.
