Chef Adam Handling is set to open the Tartan Fox pub in Cornwall next month, three years after launching his first pub, the Loch & the Tyne, in Windsor.

The Tartan Fox is situated between Newquay and Truro and will mark the chef’s second Cornish venture once it opens on 4 June.

The grade II-listed pub will showcase zero-waste, modern British food similar in approach to Handling’s Ugly Butterfly restaurant and bar in Carbis Bay, as well as the Michelin Bib Gourmand-winning Loch & the Tyne.

Handling named the 90-cover pub the Tartan Fox to reflect both his Scottish roots and the location of the pub, which he has likened to a fox’s home.

The Tartan Fox was once known as Carvynick House and dates back to the 1600s. It was built by the Tanner family and was believed to have been the marital home of Anthony Tanner and Grace Carthew.

It now features a bar, wine room, restaurant and two private dining rooms complete with exposed brickwork, wall-mounted lanterns, snug areas and an extensive garden.

The Barn at the Tartan Fox will provide an additional external events space for over 100 guests, which can be hired for weddings and parties.

Handling said: “I’ve always loved Cornwall, so when this opportunity came up, it was one I just couldn’t refuse. The pub is completely stunning, steeped in history, set in the Cornish countryside with so much land. Cornwall is one of the most beautiful places in Britain and it produces some incredible ingredients.

“It’s amazing to have the chance to combine the history of this stunning building with sustainable British food, made from local Cornish ingredients. You might not know you’re in an Adam Handling restaurant when you walk in, but you’ll know it by the time you walk out.”

Adam Handling also owns and operates the Michelin-starred Frog by Adam Handling and Eve Bar in London.
