Acorns 2019: Alexander Wilson, 28

Reception manager, Browns hotel, London

Nominator Aria Gianquitto, PR manager, Brown's hotel

Proudest moment "Leading such a dedicated and forward-thinking reception team."

Greatest inspiration "Stuart Johnson, managing director of Brown's, has been a mentor, guide and pillar of support for nine years. I am proud to work with such a passionate and internationally recognised industry figure."

Why hospitality is a great career "The more I work in the hotel industry, the more I enjoy it. The opportunity for self-growth and progression is ever-evolving and the team at Brown's are my second family. It is an incredibly exciting time to be in the industry."

It seems it is not just Acorns judges who value Alexander Wilson's talents and commitment. In the past year, he has been appointed as a government adviser to the prime minister for hospitality, management and administration, primarily tasked with rolling out the new vocational level programmes in 2021/22.

But this level of achievement is routine. The first flash of his talent appeared in 2005 when he was a finalist in the Springboard Future Chef Competition. He went on to study hospitality management at the University of Surrey and, in 2011, during a placement in the Royal Household, gained the Master of the Household's Award for services to the Royal Wedding.

He joined Elite Hotels as graduate manager, progressing to reception manager in 2014. In 2016, he moved to Brown's as house manager and skipped through the ranks to his current role in October 2018.

Wilson has trained the team to upsell room categories with warmth and flair, contributing a 21% increase in rooms revenue and seeing the average daily rate rise by 4.1% year-to-date.

And he doesn't forget about his team. His introduction of an effective mentoring programme earned him the hotel's Putting People First Award in 2018. As for going above and beyond, in 2018, chairman Sir Rocco Forte gave him the company's first Special Recognition Award for giving a guest CPR.
