Hotel Meudon applies to extend for third time in bid to make business ‘viable’

Kingfisher Resorts had applied to extend the property twice previously, but both requests were refused

Plans to extend Hotel Meudon in Cornwall have been submitted for the third time with its owner saying expansion is a “necessary step to underpin the sustainability of the hotel”.

Kingfisher Resorts, which acquired the 30-bedroom hotel in 2020, had applied to extend the property twice previously, but both requests were refused by Cornwall Council’s planning committee.

In both 2022 and 2024 Kingfisher applied to build 10 new holiday cottages in the grounds of the site.

For its most recent application the proposed development has been reduced to six holiday units, comprising 15 additional bedrooms.

Cornwall Council refused the earlier applications as it said the proposals failed to conserve and enhance the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In its most recent application, Kingfisher Resorts reduced the number of holiday cottages and made changes to ensure they were obscured from view.

The proposal also includes the development of a new 20m outdoor heated swimming pool, a casual dining restaurant and a gym.

Kingfisher Resorts has said the development would create 31 more jobs and ensure the property’s financial viability in the medium- to long-term.

The application read: “The proposal is a necessary step in securing the future legacy and medium to long term sustainability of the hotel business and the historic sub-tropical ornamental valley garden.

"The provision of additional lettable keys to the hotel inventory is an integral component of this strategy.”

The owner has said the current 30-bedroom hotel is too small to support a “year-round long term viable business and upkeep of the valley garden sustainably”.
