Originally slated for January 2011 and then shifted to April, the new coins will not now appear until 1 January 2012, giving operators more time to update their coin mechanisms.

The new coins will be made from steel with a nickel coating, will be 11% thicker than current coins (with a depth of 1.9mm instead of 1.7mm) and will be magnetic.

The switch is designed to save the Royal Mint up to £8m a year but it will cost the vending industry £42m and the coin machine industry as a whole up to £100m.
